Maternity linksFor links to a slew of nursing clothing retailers, visit Hot Mama Style.

It's a crazy, mixed-up world out there. There are sites devoted to selling you stuff so that your pesky baby will stop wanting your attention, and sites devoted to telling you that you're a failure unless all you do is give attention. We tried to find those that will appeal to both sides of the hot mama. I've rated them using my patented granola system. (No letters, please, I love granola and think it’s the cornerstone of the future.) By the by, all these sites rate 4 stars and 2 thumbs up for content, or they wouldn’t be on this list.

Links will open in a new browser window. Close that window to return to One Hot Mama.

4 Granolas = If you raise your own food, and haven’t seen the inside of a mall in a decade, you’ll be happy here.
3 Granolas = Five words: Cotton-diapers, all the time
2 Granolas = The heath-food store on is your regular shopping circuit. So is Macy’s.
1 Granola = An understanding of the principles of whole living, but both feet firmly planted in modern America.
0 Granolas = Bright neon, fast food and good-old-fashioned capitalism.

Annaproducts

Home of The Anna Pillow -- the only nursing pillow on the market that takes into account the fact that women actually come in different sizes! Their adjustable height trick all but eliminates breast and back strain. Designed by nursing moms (as if an R+D department at Nestle could have come up with this one!)

At-HomeMother
1 Granola
I'm not only a member of the Association of At-Home Mothers, I'm the president. No, not really, but this is a cool group of females who've banded together to offer support, advice, encouragement (and reality checks) to moms who decide to stay at home. It ain't all bonbons and soap operas, you know!"

Babies Online
0 granolas
A cool automated birth announcement system, plus photo contests.

Babycenter

They’re a large, San Francisco-based company. I can’t quite suss out any one philosophy, but they do run banner ads by Johnson&Johnson, for example. They sell all the supplies, but not slings, you allegedly "need" for your baby. But face it, some of that stuff is fun to have. Also has a conception blocker, so you can not end up with the baby of a rabid football fan due on Super Sunday or other important date.

Breastfeeding Basics
2 granolas
Lots of helpful articles and support for nursing moms, run by a lactation consultant and mom of 6. (!)

Breastfeeding.com

These guys are the best! Not only do they have lots of support, and funny pages and news, but they've got oodles of streaming video that answers your breastfeeding questions in ways that words can't match. (Have you ever tried to describe the perfect latch-on to someone who's never seen a nursing baby? Actually, until I nursed my firstborn, I don't think I'd seen a nursing baby myself!) All that, and they're nice!

compleatmother
4 Granolas
Great article on co-sleeping and how to adapt it to your family. Cartoons, which you already know I love, and interesting discussions about circumcision and more.

This pattern company was a lifesaver for me — and actually inspired me to start One Hot Mama. You see, while they’re the only place to find patterns with nursing opening, their designs are, shall we say, not the most fashion forward in the known universe. But they are easy to sew, and you can quickly figure out which fabrics will update which patterns. Many of the patterns are adaptable for maternity too, so if you’re tandem nursing — God help you :) — or just planning ahead, they’re a good buy. They also have nursing bras and other helpful stuff. I like ‘em!

Hip Mama
2 Granolas
A site for fans of Ariel Gore’s ‘zine of the same name. Advice for dealing with custody issues, welfare and more. Also a column about your sex life! Yes, you, the mother or mother-to-be. You have a sex life. (Or had, and will again)

Japanese Weekend
1 Granola
Just so you can see that the stuff of theirs that we sell is priced a little more reasonably at One Hot Mama. Also has sizing info, in case you need it.

La Leche League International
3 Granolas
Can you say, "everything you always wanted to know about nursing but were afraid to ask"? How to find a group in your area, info about the upcoming conferences and much, much more.  A terrific resource for nursing moms.

Mothering
4 Granolas, but
check it out even
if you’re a
die-hard plastics user.
The site for Mothering magazine, a beautiful compilation of information and support. Presents all sides of issues that are non-issues in Parent, Child or Parenting (until about a year later, if ever). Assumes that you want to be connected to your kids, not looking for ways to separate and not feel guilty about it.

Mothers' Nature
2 1/2 Granolas
Cool site with links and resources, some suggested by the natural parenting moms who populate the site. Businesses (like ours!) are listed, there's a cool auction feature with new and used stuff for families, and diaper and other info
abounds.

The Natural Child Project
3 Granolas
The Natural Child Project has articles and advice on attachment parenting and unschooling. The site includes articles by Alice Miller, Mothering editor Peggy O'Mara, counselor Naomi Aldort, Jan Hunt, and others.
Also included is the Global Children's Art Gallery, with over 200 great pictures of children around the world.
Their motto is "a world in which all children are treated with dignity, respect, understanding, and compassion."  Pretty nice, dontya think?

Peapods
2 Granolas
Natural toys and diapers, plus a cute attachment parenting site. This section called "carrots and sticks" lets you sound off about companies and or people that either deserve praise for their support of breastfeeding — or not.

Promom
3 Granolas
Promotion of Mother's Milk, Inc. (ProMoM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness and public acceptance of breastfeeding. A list of 101 Reasons to Breastfeed your child. Also has a gallery of fine art, photos and clip art. Check out the ad for the new Tru-Breast in the Features section. Their articles on breastfeeding cut to the chase and make sense.

Salon Magazine
1 Granola
Cool chicks who have made time to tap out articles like "Mother Time" by Jennifer Bingham Hull. Also has our fave author Anne Lamott. You can subscribe online. Please check out editor Camille Peri’s "Mamafesto" — she sounds just like One Hot Mama.

Pregnancy and Parenting at StorkNet
1 Granola
This is a huge site, but the best part is their birth stories.  I'm a sucker for them, and not because of the emotional "thrill of victory" each one contains.  They're quite educational to read before you have your own baby, and cathartic to write afterwards.  Also very cool is their pregnancy week-by-week guide.

The Umbilical Card
3 Granolas
We met Lauren, the artist, at the 2003 LLLI Conference. Not only is she a hoot, but she handmakes the cutest cards for babies and mums -- ever. Those of you looking for a card for someone pregnant with multiples, or for a card for a dark-skinned baby will be especially psyched to find custom Gestationary and Lactationary cards.

Wears the Baby
3 Granolas
A site that dares us to work for the underclass of children. Cool bartering area, plus articles from a feminist mom and two dads (not of the same child, but you'll see when you get there!). They have beautifully made wooden toys and reversible sunhats for your little one.  A great site.
